“Dialogues” brings together a selection of works by contemporary artists Nino Fernández, Marcelo Larrosa, Federico Méndez, and Gustavo Serra, who engage in dialogue with the Augusto Torres – Elsa Andrada Collection, in the custody of MAPI. This collection includes ethnographic objects from Indigenous groups of North America, which enrich the exhibition’s approach by linking cultural elements from different eras and territories.

A connection between past and present

Curated by María Eugenia Méndez, this exhibition proposes an aesthetic journey that transcends the traditional narratives of contemporary art. The works, created in materials such as wood, leather, and ceramics, establish a silent dialogue with the ethnographic objects in the collection, exploring the formal and spiritual connections that persist over time.

“Dialogues” is an invitation to reconsider the relevance of the constructive tradition of the Americas, recognizing the impact of Torres García as a visionary of Uruguayan and Latin American art. The artists taking part in this exhibition continue the practice of immersing themselves in Indigenous art as a source of inspiration, just as the master’s disciples did.
