Funerary Landscapes of the Border
In certain rural areas of the country, and especially in the northern departments, old stone and brick cemeteries or family mausoleums, decorated in the style of the period, can be seen on some estancias (ranches). These structures were commissioned by ranchers or merchants for the use of their families and close circles during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
They are testimony to a social organization typical of the countryside of that time; they tell us about the lifestyle, customs, and beliefs of the rural inhabitants, which in some places have survived to the present day.
