Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art
This exhibition presents 600 works of art by Mexico’s most important popular artists of today.
The objects on display come from various locations in the Mexican states. They reflect the full range of the most important crafts that make up the popular art of that country.
The collection is composed of works by the great masters who participate in the Popular Art Support Program, an initiative sponsored by Fomento Cultural Banamex to promote and support Mexican popular art.
The Folk Art Support Program was created in 1996 to revitalize artistic traditions that are in danger of disappearing.
The decline in the use of raw materials and millenary traditional techniques, in addition to the waning interest in the production of popular art shown by the younger Mexican generations, had begun to undermine artisan traditions, with the consequent threat to the future of this type of art.
The interest in their survival led Banamex to develop the Popular Art Support Program.
