Human Zoos
Images of natives of the Southern Cone (Mapuche and Fuegian), which were taken to Europe at the end of the 19th century to be exhibited in what became known as “human zoos”.
The practice of anthropozoological exhibitions (of humans and animals in the same context) lasted approximately half a century (from 1880 to 1930).
The exhibition is based on the publication by Christian Baez (Chile) and Peter Mason (UK): “Zoológicos humanos. Photographs of Fuegians and Mapuches in the Jardin d’ Acclimatation in Paris, 19th century” and exhibits photographs on loan from the Sociéte Géographique, now in the archives of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
Under the auspices of the Embassy of Chile.
