MAPI as a post-digital leader in Latin America
The Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art celebrates the publication of the article “Communication, Transmedia and Artificial Intelligence at MAPI”, by Facundo de Almeida —University of the Republic— and Valentina Golubei —Universidad ORT Uruguay—, in Vol. 40 (2026) of the journal Dixit, published by the Catholic University of Uruguay.
The research is part of the dossier “Museums in the Society of Digitalization” and examines MAPI as a case study in museum innovation in Latin America.
Using a mixed methodology that combines literature review, documentary analysis, audience observation and interviews, the authors analyze the integration of transmedia narratives, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality and metaverse environments into the museum’s institutional strategy.
Among its main findings, the study argues that digitalization at MAPI does not replace the in-person experience but rather expands it, diversifying audiences, strengthening accessibility and projecting the museum as an actor in cultural diplomacy.
The article also addresses the ethical dimensions of digital transformation and positions MAPI as a leading example of a post-digital museum in the region.
