MAPI launches video guides in Uruguayan Sign Language on World Deafblind Day

Video guides in Uruguayan Sign Language are now available on the iOS app.

In the framework of World Deafblind Day, celebrated today, June 27, the MAPI – Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art presents a new accessibility tool: video guides in Uruguayan Sign Language (USL), available today on its app for iOS devices, thanks to the support of the Research and Development Center for Deaf People (CINDE). In addition, the app now includes audio guides in English and Portuguese, thus expanding its reach to international visitors and people with different information access needs. The Android version will be available soon.

These new features represent a significant advance in inclusion, allowing deaf people to access the museum’s contents in their own language and facilitating visits for those who communicate in other languages. The guides offer information about MAPI’s collections and exhibitions, promoting a more equitable, participatory, and enriching museum experience.

The initiative is part of a broader process that MAPI has been developing to ensure universal accessibility. Among other actions already implemented are the installation of a wheelchair lift that allows access to the heritage building, as well as ongoing improvements to infrastructure, signage, and services.

With these actions, MAPI reaffirms its commitment to the right of all people to enjoy cultural heritage on an equal basis.
