Mercedes Sosa represents MAPI in “Museums for Education and Research”.

As part of the 12th edition of “May: Month of Museums”, Mercedes Sosa, in charge of the collection of the Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena (MAPI), represented the museum at the event “Museums for Education and Research” at the Municipality of Montevideo. During his participation, Sosa presented a paper entitled “What the objects tell us”, in which he addressed the significant research work that MAPI has carried out in its collection.
In her presentation, Mercedes Sosa explained how the MAPI team, in collaboration with other partners, is dedicated to classifying and documenting each piece in its collection, giving each object a detailed history, its community provenance and its specific use. This task not only enriches the cultural and educational value of the museum, but also strengthens ties with the native communities by recognizing and respecting their traditions and ancestral knowledge, as well as their current practices.
The “Museums for Education and Research” event brought together museum professionals from across the country to discuss best practices and share experiences on how museums can play a crucial role in education and research. Mercedes Sosa’s participation and her presentation highlighted MAPI’s dedication to the conservation and dissemination of pre-Columbian and indigenous cultural heritage, underlining the importance of detailed research to keep the cultural heritage of the communities alive.
“May: Museum Month” is an annual initiative that celebrates the diversity and richness of museums, promoting educational and cultural activities for all audiences. MAPI is committed to education and cultural preservation.
