The renowned bandoneon player Néstor Marconi returns to Montevideo and will perform in concert at the MAPI – Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art on Thursday, April 9, at 8 pm.

After several years without performing in the city, the bandoneon maestro will offer a concert showcasing his celebrated career as a composer, arranger, orchestrator and performer, considered one of the most outstanding figures of contemporary tango.

A leading international figure of the bandoneon

Throughout his career, Néstor Marconi has worked with great figures of Argentine and world music. In the 1970s he was associated with figures such as Horacio Salgán, Ástor Piazzolla, Héctor Stamponi and Enrique Francini.

During the 1980s he took part, together with Ástor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer, in the celebrated work María de Buenos Aires. In the 1990s he began an intense career as a soloist in classical music, performing Ástor Piazzolla’s Concerto for Bandoneon and Orchestra, as well as his own arrangements of traditional tangos and original compositions with orchestras in different cities around the world.

In 1997 he went on an international tour presenting Alma de tango, based on the music of Piazzolla, together with the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He also took part in the film Tango (1998), and in 2000 he recorded and presented in concert Esperanto, a work by Lalo Schifrin, in Cologne (Germany).

Marconi has also developed an outstanding career as a conductor and arranger. He was director of the Juan de Dios Filiberto National Orchestra of Argentine Music, with which he performed at the Teatro Colón, conducting and playing his work Tangos Concertantes with Martha Argerich as soloist. He currently conducts the Buenos Aires Tango Orchestra and the Emilio Balcarce Tango School Orchestra.
