The Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) selected a MAPI proposal for its program of workshops for beneficiaries of the Jóvenes en Red program. This initiative, promoted by the Office of the President of the Republic, is carried out jointly by several ministries of the Executive Branch.

The workshop the MAPI offers in Las Piedras, Cerro, and Manga, and at its headquarters with young people from Centro, Barrio Sur, Palermo, Casavalle, Ciudad del Plata, Colón, and Verdisol, is aimed at young beneficiaries of the program and consists of a training process in street art and its different forms of expression (graffiti, stencil, murals); its goal lies not only in learning street art techniques but also in getting to know its history—that is, how these expressions have changed from the oldest known forms, represented by rock art, to the present day.

The theoretical contributions—selected and delivered by the team behind this project—will aim to bring the young participants closer to the development of these manifestations from prehistoric times to the present, in Uruguay and around the world.

Likewise, the practical contributions will seek to introduce the participants to the various techniques used in this type of expression, both past (pictography, petroglyphs, blown paint) and present (scratching, painting), as well as materials (spray, paint), surfaces (walls, signs, houses), terminology (tag, crew), lettering, and so on.

The workshops will focus not only on formal training but also on developing artistic activities. Expressive tools will be presented, encouraging the young people to develop and create sketches, pouring a communicative intent into them, and then transfer them onto the surface of their choice. They will be encouraged to choose how they will relate and communicate with their surroundings—that is, what kind of mark they want to leave and how they will make their inscription (tagging, murals, stencil, etc.).
