TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

MAPI Takes to the Streets

Exhibition open to the public 24 hours a day with Claudio Rama's Latin American Mask Collection.

MAPI offers an exhibition open to the public 24 hours a day with Claudio Rama’s Latin American Masks Collection MAPI Da a la Calle is a weekly exhibition of Claudio Rama’s Latin American Masks Collection that takes place in the windows of MAPI Café and can be visited 24 hours a day, from 25 de Mayo Street, between Colón and Pérez Castellano.

The first exhibition is dedicated to the Diablo Cojuelo, the central character of the Carnival of La Vega, which takes place in the Dominican Republic and whose genesis dates back to colonial times, and a second showcase presents masks from the Carnival of Barranquilla, a traditional Colombian Caribbean festival. These exhibitions will be renewed weekly while the museum is closed as a consequence of the sanitary emergency and their purpose is to present the more than 700 pieces that make up Claudio Rama’s collection of masks to those who walk along 25 de Mayo Street every day or come especially to visit the exhibition.

MAPI offers numerous proposals in the virtual world, which can be accessed at https://mapi.uy/virtual. However, at this stage it is resuming one of the main activities of a museum: exhibiting its collections in person.

The exhibition of the pieces towards the street and during the 24 hours of the day allows to appreciate the pieces in direct form and without this supposes a sanitary risk, bearing in mind that it is acceded from the public space and to open sky. We urge visitors, in the event that another person is observing the exhibition, to maintain a minimum distance of two meters and to wear a mask at all times. We would especially like to invite all those who go to the vaccination center of the Maciel Hospital, before or after their vaccination, to stop by MAPI’s door to visit the exhibition.

MAPI Da a La Calle, curated by Sonia Fontans, will be open to the public, in its first edition, between March 29 and April 5. We would be grateful to those who take pictures and post them on social networks, do so with the hashtag #elmapidaalacalle and tag @mapimuseo

We look forward to seeing you!
