The MAPI – Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art, together with the Embassy of Peru in Uruguay, opens the exhibition “Arts and Letters of Peru in Caricatures”, by Uruguayan journalist, writer and caricaturist Jaime Clara, on March 18 at 12:00 pm.

The exhibition brings together 26 caricatures of prominent figures of Peruvian culture and is a tribute to the writer and diplomat Bruno Podestá, who served for more than a decade as cultural attaché of the Embassy of Peru in Uruguay and was an active promoter of cultural exchange between the two countries.

The exhibition offers a visual journey through writers, musicians, artists and thinkers who have shaped Peru’s cultural life. Among the personalities portrayed are Mario Vargas Llosa, Chabuca Granda, Susana Baca, César Vallejo, José Carlos Mariátegui, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Julio Ramón Ribeyro and Ricardo Palma, among other leading figures.

A cultural dialogue between Peru and Uruguay

Jaime Clara himself notes that his work with caricature emerged as a natural extension of his journalistic activity and his connection with the cultural world. In this series, the author discovered, almost unexpectedly, a constellation of portraits linked to Peru and its artistic tradition.

The exhibition was also born as a gesture of recognition of Bruno Podestá, a Peruvian diplomat, academic and writer who lived in Uruguay for many years and whose work was key to strengthening the cultural ties between the two countries.

Jaime Clara (San José de Mayo, 1965) is a journalist, writer, cultural communicator and caricaturist. He holds a degree in Social Communication from the Catholic University of Uruguay and has developed an extensive career in radio, press and television dedicated to cultural dissemination. He is the author of books of poetry, essays and fiction, and has held exhibitions of caricatures dedicated to figures of music, literature and culture.
