Continuing its work to share the culture of the Indigenous groups of the Canadian Arctic, the MAPI will host a lecture by Dr. Claudio Aporta on “The Inuit and space: Reflections on Indigenous wayfinding techniques and technologies in the Canadian Arctic”.

Dr. Aporta, who will visit Uruguay at the invitation of the International Development Research Centre and with the support of the Embassy of Canada, currently serves as Associate Professor in the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University.

He holds a degree in Communication from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (Argentina), and in 1997 he moved to Canada to pursue graduate (doctoral) studies at the University of Alberta, later earning a postdoctoral fellowship at Université Laval.

Since 1998 he has been involved in ethnographic research in several Inuit communities in Nunavut. His main research interests have to do with how the Inuit relate to their physical environment, as well as with the transmission of Inuit oral knowledge in the contemporary context. He also explores new ways of representing oral knowledge with tools that include multimedia technologies, GIS, GPS, and Google Earth.

He also teaches at Carleton University, and he is an honorary member of the University of Cambridge and the University of Washington.
